How to Check Event Viewer Logs from an Inaccessible Windows Cloud Instance

(Doc ID 2371005.1)

Last updated on MARCH 16, 2018

Applies to:

Oracle Compute Cloud Service - Version N/A and later
Microsoft Windows x64 (64-bit) on Oracle Public Cloud

Goal

When there are issues with the Windows Operating System in Compute Cloud Classic environments and they become inaccessible, reviewing the Event Viewer Logs can provide an indication of what occurred and whether the environment is salvageable.

In OCI-C there is no input console access for Compute Environments.  However there is a means to check on the console output using Screen Captures feature in the Instance Overview page.

If the Windows system is showing the recovery screen as shown here, there is a problem either with the boot volume or the Windows binaries:

This note will provide step by step instructions on how to mount the boot storage on a temporary instance and how to navigate to the EVT logs.
