Error 'We found a problem with some content in (Excel file name)' When Exporting a Large BI Publisher Report to XLS Format (Doc ID 2379113.1)

Symptoms

When attempting to export a BI Publisher report with more than 65536 rows to Excel the following error occurs.

We found a problem with some content in '<filename>.xls'. Do you want us to try to recover as much as we can? If you trust the source of this workbook, click Yes.

Clicking Yes then opens the document in a protected view, but the document only contains 65536 rows.

 

The issue can be reproduced at will with the following steps:

  1. Log into BI Publisher.
  2. Execute the report.
  3. Open the Excel output file.
  4. Observe the reported issue.
