REST API Call To Social Network From A Sites Component Fails

When trying to connect to https://instancename-domainname.socialnetwork.us.oraclecloud.com/osn/social/api/v1/groups from a Sites component, unless logged into Content and Experience Cloud (CEC) UI prior to hitting the page the authentication fails.
Without logging into the CEC UI, in browser, sees "Status: error error" in the page instead of the expected content.
