Not permitted to convert leads for new contacts/accounts

I've run into some problems regarding lead conversion on new contacts/accounts. For both of the scenarios (new contact/new account), I get the following error message:

"You do not have the required permission. You can request that your help desk change your security settings. Contact your help desk."

For new contacts, standard functionality has been that the contact is automatically created upon conversion. For new accounts, we have made a before insert script on opportunity that asks the user to create/select an account before converting. Neither is working.

I have all the roles I expect I would need to convert (sales rep, sales admin etc). The duty Convert Sales Lead is part of both. Can you please advice how to fix this?
