OAC: The Order Of Columns Is Different In The Data Set Editor

(Doc ID 2406699.1)

Oracle Analytics Cloud Service - Version 17.1.3 and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

The order of columns in a Data Set changes after the Data Set was created.

This issue is observed in both DVD and OAC.

This issue is not encountered with every Data Set created, but is more readily encountered when there is a relatively large number of columns in the Data Set.

For example:-

1. Create an Oracle Applications Data Connection to a Fusion Applications-OTBI Cloud Service.

2. Create a Data Set.
Select a Subject Area, and add columns one at a time in a specific order.
    Save the Data Set

3. Go to Navigator > Data > Data Sets > Locate the Data Set and select "Inspect" from its Actions Menu.
    >> See the columns appear in the same order that they were selected in #2

4. Go to Navigator > Data > Data Sets > Locate the Data Set and select "Edit" from its Actions Menu.
    >> See the columns appear in the same order that they were selected in #2

Now, click the "Edit Data Set" icon at the top right
    >> See the order of the columns is different

This issue can impact the creation of Data Flows. For example :-

Say Data Set A was created with 10 columns, and has the issue above where the "Inspect" and "Edit Data Set" column orders are different.

Say Data Set B was created with the same 10 columns using the order observed in "Edit Data Set" on Data Set A, but the "Inspect" and "Edit Data Set" column orders are the same.

Create a Data Flow with a Merge Rows step on the two Data Sets and see the following error will be thrown:
"Cannot merge rows. Columns in Inputs 1 and 2 must have the same data types to merge rows."

The Merge fails because the order and data types of the "Inspect" columns of the Data Sets do not match.
