Passport: Error " [From] The email address is invalid. "

Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

For a particular Passport screening service and related configuration, after the service is requested there is supposed to be an invitation email sent to the candidate.  The event for it is present in the candidate's submission History tab,  "Correspondence sent".  However the email was not really sent.  Without the email the service does not progress.  

In the candidate's submission History tab, the event shows the following error:

[From] The email address is invalid. Email addresses should be in the following format: alphanumerictext@mailserver.com. Please use a semicolon to separate email addresses.

Changes

There is one report of the problem happening after a zone upgrade.
