“ar: 0707-110 There is not enough memory available now” happens when applying patch (Doc ID 2423225.1)

Last updated on JANUARY 02, 2020

Applies to:

Oracle Database Exadata Express Cloud Service - Version N/A and later
Oracle Cloud Infrastructure - Database Service - Version N/A and later
Oracle Database Cloud Exadata Service - Version N/A and later
Oracle Database Backup Service - Version N/A and later
Oracle Database Cloud Service - Version N/A and later
IBM AIX on POWER Systems (64-bit)

Symptoms

When applying PSU to a 2-node RAC, one is successful. but the other one fails with below errors

Backing up files...
Applying sub-patch '17478514' to OH '/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/db_1'
File not backed up from kcfis.o to /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/db_1/.patch_storage/17478514_Dec_30_2013_03_38_50/files/lib/libserver11.a/kcfis.o... 'ar: 0707-110 There is not enough memory available now.
'
ApplySession failed in system modification phase... 'ar: 0707-110 There is not enough memory available now.

By comparing  '$ORACLE_HOME/lib/libserver11.a' in other cluster nodes, the size are different

For example, in my test env, the size is

$ ls -l $ORACLE_HOME/lib/libserver11.a
-rw-r--r-- 1 oracle oinstall 229570694 Jul 17 08:17 /refresh/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/dbhome_1/lib/libserver11.a

Notice: depend on different db/patch version,  this may be different in other env. You'd better compare your size with a good node in same patch version.
