Requests made to sales cloud service are timing out

Receiving timeout errors for approximately 50% of the requests made to the sales cloud web service.
These calls are being made via a custom interface installed in our retail Micros RES 3700 point of sale system. This is occurring at all stores. . The interface looks up and/or updates contacts in the sales cloud data base for our loyalty members, it also communicates with our loyalty system.
The loyalty system provider at the client end reviewed the logs and verified that for the requests that they are not seeing the requests that are being time out come into their system.
