SmartText Message Body Disappears

When we respond to a message in an SR for HR Help Desk, if you use SmartText to populate the message body, this test is not visible in the message edit screen after it is added. However, you can tell that the text is actually there because it is visible in Preview and after you Send the message. Why isn't the text of the SmartText displayed in the Message edit screen?
