Process Life Event error - Too many plans selected for plan type

When processing an unprocessed life event for an employee who transferred into a benefit eligible position, we are receiving the following error: "You selected too many plans for this plan type. You can select up to 1 plans. (BEN-990217) The plan type is Basic Life. You selected 2 plans.

We have not made any plan selections yet at this stage. This issue is consistently reproducible. It is occurring in our production environment but has been recreated in our test pod: edyc-test.

I am not able to complete the steps with logging enabled as I received the "A connection to the server has failed" error.
