Approvals are not getting routed when trying to submit a contract

When I try to create a new contract and submit it, I am getting an error.

Error occurred while displaying history tree table. Error in evaluating routing slip

The issue can be reproduced at will with the following steps:
1. Submit contract for approval
2. Expand approvers
3. Get error

The issue has the following business impact:
Due to this issue, users cannot approve contracts.
