How can we retrieve lookups from REST API in user's locale?

We're building a custom app using Sales Cloud's REST API - we're following the advice in Doc ID 2425311.1 (How To Get LOV Values Using REST API/webservice) to retrieve lookups, using the /fndStaticLookups API.
However, the lookups are returned in English always and never based on the user's language preference/locale.
I have set the user's preference in Sales Cloud, yet still the lookups are in English.
Please could you advise how we can achieve this?
