Version: 20.3.11 Version

This documentation explains a change introduced in CSV Export/Import feature exists in Admin UI > Catalog.  This change was made to prevent potential attack.

CSV export data could contain property values that are executed as formulas in Excel. If a property value begins with any of the following special characters, Excel would interpret the string instead of just displaying it.

To avoid this from happening, an escape character is added before these special characters on export. This escape character is then stripped off on import if it's the first character in the cell and is followed by a special character.

Example of what you see at the start of a cell in Excel if a property value started with one of these characters:

Note that the escape character is not required to be in CSV file for import to work.

In summary, you will see the escape character in CSV file if

  1. There is a property value that starts with one of these special characters which could include a negative number (e.g. -1)
  2. Catalog data is exported via Admin

This feature change can impact if csv export data is currently read by 3rd party systems.
