Symptoms

When connecting to a destination server from command line ssh -vvv, the negotiation process with the destination fails with the following error:

Unable to negotiate with port 22: no matching MAC found. Their offer: hmac-sha1

The ssh -Q mac command shows that the hashing algorithm hmac-sha1 is available at the client end, so it is unclear why the negotiation has failed.
