PRC:SSP How Many Charactors Can Be Entered on Requisition Item Description?

In the document "Tables and Views for Oracle Procurement Cloud" we see length = 240 for the column ITEM_DESCRIPTION of POR_REQUISITION_LINES_ALL table. Is it number of characters, or number of byte?
