Unable To Remove A Language From A Repository Due To Orphaned Items On Site Pages

Symptoms
We're trying to remove the "en-US" language from a repository but we are getting an error for two content items in it that can't be removed.
They were both once used on the sites, but their containing slots (in the page layouts) have since been removed.
The sites still consider them used on their pages, yet there's no longer a way to locate them or remove them in the site builder so they are orphaned.
The ultimate goal is to remove en-US from the repository (and associated channels) but we're stuck at this point because these two remaining en-US items are still in use / orphaned on two site pages
