Images are served through CDN image server that may automatically compress the image with the right dimensions such that no excessive data is downloaded. However, such image server won't work when basic authentication is enabled. This means the lower environments won't benefit the performance gain through such image downloading optimization. This article addresses how to get such performance benefit in lower environments even with basic auth is enabled.
