Accessing Content Item Data Fields Programmatically On A Site (Doc ID 2911701.1)

Goal

We are in the process of adding some JavaScript to sites, and we want this script to read some custom data fields from a content item. We are not exactly sure how to make these fields accessible. Currently we are able to get some of the fields accessible by manipulating the layout.html for the asset but not for all of the data fields.
