Entry Manager throws Validation Error (Doc ID 2940902.1)

Symptoms

When trying to update the Entry Manager of a commerce menu attribute, the following error message is shown:
Menu value *entry value* is present in an associated data table column that is validating against it. Please remove the value from the table prior to deleting this menu item 

This error is shown even when not removing the entry value specified by the error. In fact, this error is thrown even if no changes are made to the entries, whether we press the "Apply" button or the "Update" button.
