OCI Virtual Networking - OCI Load Balancer is not Responding to Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP)
(Doc ID 2959713.1)
Last updated on AUGUST 17, 2023
Applies to:
Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Virtual Networking - Version N/A and laterInformation in this document applies to any platform.
Symptoms
Loss of ICMP packets while checking OCI load balancer's health. The ping response from the load balancer is intermittent.
Changes
To improve the load balancer availability and posture, the load balancer service migrated all existing load balancers in OCI to a new infrastructure.
In our new architecture, the traffic is distributed between the two load balancers instead of relying on just one. This improves the availability of the load balancers. In the event of a failure, instead of moving traffic from one load balancer to another, we simply stop sending traffic to the failing load balancer and route all traffic to the working one.
The infrastructure currently has a software bug that incorrectly handles ICMP echo request/reply packets which get dropped.
