POM Callbacks Failing With SSLHandshakeException/CertPathValidatorException (Doc ID 3059489.1)

Goal

Callbacks are failing in POM for a customer hosted domain (non-Oracle domain/host) with exception:

 

When accessing the callback URL (for example, in Firefox) the browser shows:

Warning: Potential Security Risk Ahead

and clicking on the Advanced button shows:

Websites prove their identity via certificates, which are valid for a set time period. The certificate for <customer hosted domain> expired on MM/DD/YYYY.
Error code: SEC_ERROR_EXPIRED_CERTIFICATE

Further clicking on the View Certificate link shows:

Validity section
Not After <day of week, DD MON YYYY HH:MI:SS time zone>
