AW Size "exploded" During AW Update Leading to ORA-03238: Unable to Extend LOB Segment (Doc ID 3079765.1)

Symptoms

ORA-03238: unable to extend LOB segment errors logged in the alert log.

This happened when an AW size "exploded" upon UPDATE:

For example, an AW of 41GB expanded to 1.2TB, and in another case, an AW of a few GB expanded to 850GB. As this was consuming all available tablespace, the following errors were logged in the alert log:

 

Changes

 Upgrade from 11g to 19C.
