Purpose

This document aims to define the kernel naming conventions on Linux distributions.

Scope

This document applies to system and database administrators working on Linux environments RedHat AS 2.1, OL 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, Novell/SuSE SLES 8, 9 and Asianux 1.0.

The nomenclature is provided in BNF (Backus Naur Form) notation.

Note: Not all the kernel types are covered in this document. Only the major ones.
