Symptoms
ORA-12701: CREATE DATABASE character set is not known
Cause: The character set specified in the CREATE DATABASE command does not exist on the system.
or
ORA-12710 CREATE CONTROLFILE character set is not known
Cause: The character set specified when creating the controlfile is unknown.
Changes
You are trying to specify a character set other than the default character set US7ASCII.
You have checked to make sure that the character set you are requesting is typed in correctly.
You have also tried enclosing the character set string in double quotes, e.g. CHARACTER SET "WE8MSWIN1252".
