Symptoms

On 10.2.0.4 production:

When attempting to drop some unused columns of a compressed partitioned table, the following error occurs.

ERROR

ORA-39726: unsupported add/drop column operation on compressed tables


STEPS
-----------------------

SQL> create table t (a number, b number)
partition by range(a) (partition p1
values less than (1), partition pdef values less than(maxvalue)) compress; 2 3

Table created.

SQL> alter table t drop column b;
alter table t drop column b
*
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-39726: unsupported add/drop column operation on compressed tables


Even if the table is changed back to uncompressed the column is not allowed to be dropped.
