It's a mandatory requirement for any Spatial functionality, that all geometries to be processed are valid. No validation is carried out in Spatial functions and sub-programs; it is assumed all geometries are valid. This is to ensure maximum execution performance. Invalid geometries can lead to unexpected errors when executing Spatial queries, so the first action of troubleshooting any Spatial problem should be to ensure your Spatial data is valid.
