RMAN deleting archive log(s) but file remains on disk

Symptoms
The following is reported by RMAN:
RMAN-08071: channel t1: deleting archive log(s)
RMAN-08514: archive log filename=/<path>/arch_1_245576_532039363.arc recid=103969 stamp=718435497
RMAN-08514: archive log filename=/<path>/arch_1_245577_532039363.arc recid=103970 stamp=718435762
But the file remains at the o/s level.
v$archived_log also shows the file as being available.
