Last updated on JULY 02, 2015

Applies to:

Oracle Database - Enterprise Edition - Version 7.3.3.0 to 8.0.4.4 [Release 7.3.3 to 8.0.4]
Generic UNIX
***Checked for relevance on 20-Sep-2013***

Symptoms

During an import into either a 7.3.x or 8.0.x (up to release 8.0.4) database you encounter the following error:

IMP-20: long column too large for column buffer size (%lu)
*Cause: The column buffer is too small. This usually occurs when importing LONG data.
*Action: Increase the insert buffer size 10,000 bytes at a time (for example). Use this step-by-step approach because a buffer size that is too large may cause a similar problem.

This can occur both when the tables you are importing contain LONG fields and also when they do not.

The export is successful and you have tried FULL, USER and TABLE level export/import. Each fail with the same error.

This problem has been send when using either DIRECT or CONVENTIONAL export.
