Symptoms
When the SQL*Net alias is based on a service name rather than on a SID, the connections to the database are failing intermittently with ORA-1017.
Note that this can also manifest itself as ORA-28000 "the account is locked" (when, for example, connection to a known schema like DBSNMP)
