Instance Startup Fails With ORA-00205 After Applying Patch/Relinking (Doc ID 1166697.1)

Symptoms

o 11.2 Grid Infrastructure & RDBMS 11.2, 11.1 or 10
o database files stored in ASM
o GI and RDBMS homes set up for job role separation using different software owners
o attempt to start the database instance via sqlplus immediately after the Oracle executable has been relinked (e.g. after patching) returns the following error:

The Oracle executable has been relinked, e.g. as part of patching (PSU etc) the database home.
