Symptoms

An after update trigger raises ORA-12899 on production system when new timestamp value is assigned a systimestamp value.
A scaled-down sample of the trigger source code might include something like:

CREATE OR REPLACE TRIGGER <trigger_name>
BEFORE UPDATE ON <table_name>
  for each row
  REFERENCING NEW AS NEW OLD AS OLD
DECLARE
...
BEGIN
...
:NEW.LAST_UPDATE_DATE := SYSTIMESTAMP;
END;
/
