Will Dropping an Empty Partition Cause a Global Index to Become Unusable? (Doc ID 1296557.1)

According to the Oracle Administrator's Guide for 10g and the VLDB and Partitioning Guide for 11g, when dropping a partition you should "use the 'update indexes' clause to drop the local indexes and update the global index so it does not become unusable (see Method 3)."

If the partition to be dropped is empty, however, do you still need to use the UPDATE INDEXES clause to prevent the global index from becoming unusable?
