Using the TNS_ADMIN variable and changing the default port number of all Listeners in an 11.2 RAC for an 11.2, 11.1, and 10.2 Database

Goal

The purpose of this note is to describe the necessary steps to use the TNS_ADMIN variable in an 11.2 Grid infrastructure for the 11.2, 11.1, and 10.2 Oracle Databases. In this note, each database version can be treated as a separate install into an 11.2 Grid infrastructure.

The general technique used is to first start from the Grid and Database installations using all default settings. Once the various databases have been installed and validated to be working, then make the changes necessary to use the TNS_ADMIN variable and the files in that directory. Once the change to use the TNS_ADMIN has been validated to work, then make change the default port numbers of the Listeners and the modifications to the corresponding entries in the tnsnames.ora file.

There are many steps and phases in this document which make changes to the Cluster and Instances running in it. This paper was written with the assumption that a fresh installation of all the software is occurring, in which case the system is not in production. It might be possible to perform these steps without taking a Cluster-wide outage, but such a procedure would be much lengthier. This paper is intended to show what needs to be changed and why.

It is possible that not everything will work as outlined in this paper, so look at note 948456.1 for various errors that can occur in this environment.
