Last updated on MAY 09, 2011

Applies to:

Oracle Server - Enterprise Edition - Version: to - Release: 10.2 to 11.2
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Intermittently the Streams apply process will report an ORA-1461 error applying either an insert or update.

The following error is reported in the alert log file.

ORA-01461: can bind a LONG value only for insert into a LONG column
ORA-06512: at line 1.

The errors are intermittent and may occur every few days or every few weeks depending on the system involved. The failed transaction can then be successfully applied via dbms_apply_adm.execute_error.

The errors involve INSERT and UPDATE DML on the same table. The errorstack indicates that the cursor for which the ORA-1461 error has been triggered has a large number of child cursors. There is also an indication of problem with bind values within the errorstack information
