Last updated on APRIL 04, 2013

Applies to:

Oracle Database - Enterprise Edition - Version 11.2.0.2 to 11.2.0.2 [Release 11.2]
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

On RAC or Standalone ASM/ACFS Grid Infrastructure 11.2.0.2.0 configurations on Windows Server 2008 R1/R2, unable to format/create ACFS filesystem due to the next error:

D:\app\11.2.0\grid\BIN>D:\app\11.2.0\grid\BIN\acfsformat.exe /b 4k
\\.\asm-acfsdgvol-168
acfsformat: version = 11.2.0.2.0
acfsformat: on-disk version = 39.0
acfsformat: volume = \\.\asm-acfsdgvol-168
acfsformat: ACFS-01094: \\.\asm-acfsdgvol-168 is not an ADVM volume
acfsformat: ACFS-01004: \\.\asm-acfsdgvol-68 was not formatted.

Changes

This problem is reproducible as follow:

1) I installed the Oracle Grid Infrastructure 11.2.0.2 on the next 2-node RAC cluster (Windows 2008 R2 64-bit):

10.220.17.246 celx64w2k8d.us.oracle.com celx64w2k8d

10.220.17.248 celx64w2k8e.us.oracle.com celx64w2k8e

2) I downloaded the 11.2.0.2 Grid Infrastructure Software (for Windows 64-bit) from:

=)> 11.2.0.2 Patchset Location For Grid Infrastructure And RDBMS. (Doc ID 1223673.1)

https://updates.oracle.com/download/10098816.html

3) And uncompressed it at the next directory on celx64w2k8d node:

C:\>hostname
celx64w2k8d

4) Then I installed the Oracle Grid Infrastructure 11.2.0.2 on the next 2-node RAC cluster (Windows 2008 R2 64-bit):

10.220.17.246 celx64w2k8d.us.oracle.com celx64w2k8d

10.220.17.248 celx64w2k8e.us.oracle.com celx64w2k8e

5) The Oracle home is located at the next directory(on both nodes):

D:\app\11.2.0\grid>

6) +ASM1 & +ASM2 instances were created:

D:\app\11.2.0\grid\BIN>set ORACLE_SID=+ASM1

D:\app\11.2.0\grid\BIN>sqlplus "/as sysasm"

SQL> column host_name format a20
SQL> select Inst_id, instance_name, host_name from gv$instance;

INST_ID INSTANCE_NAME HOST_NAME
---------- ---------------- --------------------
1 +asm1 CELX64W2K8D
2 +asm2 CELX64W2K8E

7) OCR_VOTE diskgroup was created and mounted on both +ASM1 & +ASM2 instances:

SQL> select inst_id, name, state from gv$asm_diskgroup;

INST_ID NAME STATE
---------- ------------------------------ -----------
2 OCR_VOTE MOUNTED
1 OCR_VOTE MOUNTED

8) OCR & Voting disk location:

D:\app\11.2.0\grid\BIN>crsctl query css votedisk
## STATE File Universal Id File Name Disk group
-- ----- ----------------- --------- ---------
1. ONLINE 1117ac0ca86c4fa5bf2eb22a012196f6 (\\.\ORCLDISKOCR_VOTE0)
[OCR_VOTE]

Located 1 voting disk(s).

D:\app\11.2.0\grid\BIN>ocrcheck -config
Oracle Cluster Registry configuration is :
Device/File Name : +OCR_VOTE

9) Then I stamped a new raw devices to create the ACFS diskgroup using the asmtoolg with the ORCLDISKACFS0€ label:

Node #1:

D:\app\11.2.0\grid\BIN>asmtool -list
NTFS \Device\Harddisk1\Partition1 25598M
NTFS \Device\Harddisk2\Partition1 20477M

ORCLDISK \Device\Harddisk7\Partition1 8189M
ORCLDISKACFS0 \Device\Harddisk8\Partition1 20477M

Node #2:

D:\app\11.2.0\grid\BIN>asmtool -list
NTFS \Device\Harddisk1\Partition1 25598M
NTFS \Device\Harddisk2\Partition1 20477M
ORCLDISKOCR_VOTE0 \Device\Harddisk3\Partition1 7675M

\Device\Harddisk3\Partition3 256M

ORCLDISK \Device\Harddisk4\Partition3 7675M

\Device\Harddisk6\Partition1 8189M
ORCLDISK \Device\Harddisk7\Partition1 8189M
ORCLDISKACFS0 \Device\Harddisk8\Partition1 20477M

10) Then using ASMCA created the ACFSDG diskgroup and it was mounted on both +ASM1 & +ASM2 instances:

D:\app\11.2.0\grid\BIN>sqlplus "/as sysasm"

11) I created the ACFSDGVOL volume, in the ACFSDG diskgroup & it is present on both ASM instances:

SQL> select inst_id, group_number, volume_name, size_mb, volume_device from
gv$asm_volume;

INST_ID GROUP_NUMBER VOLUME_NAME SIZE_MB VOLUME_DEVICE
---------- ------------ --------------- ----------
-----------------------------
2 1 ACFSDGVOL 2048 \\.\asm-acfsdgvol-168
1 1 ACFSDGVOL 2048 \\.\asm-acfsdgvol-168

12) But ASM is reporting the next error when I try to create/format the ACFS filesystem (either thru ASMCA or manually), this is the last part of ACFS configuration:

D:\app\11.2.0\grid\BIN>D:\app\11.2.0\grid\BIN\acfsformat.exe /b 4k
\\.\asm-acfsdgvol-168
acfsformat: version = 11.2.0.2.0

acfsformat: ACFS-01094: \\.\asm-acfsdgvol-168 is not an ADVM volume
acfsformat: ACFS-01004: \\.\asm-acfsdgvol-68 was not formatted.

13) Very odd message since the \\.\asm-acfsdgvol-168 volume is present:

ASMCMD> volinfo -a
