This article seeks to give a general overview of the roles and privileges functionality for the Oracle RDBMS. It delineates advantages and limitations of administering privileges through roles. The effects of granting and revoking roles are analyzed and important authorization and security issues are discussed.
This article is intended to assist all Oracle DBAs who need to administer security on the database. All of the points covered in this article are applicable to currently supported Oracle RDBMS versions. Some newer features like secure application roles remain undiscussed, however all the topics covered in this article are valid for the current releases and remain important as a conceptual background.
