Purpose
This document explains how to identify unused indexes in order to remove them.
Scope
DBAs must be aware that unused indexes:
- consume storage space
- degrade performance by unnecessary overheads during DML operations. The more indexes added to a table, the more "underlying activities/housekeeping" is required during DML. This is why it's so important not to maintain any indexes which are not being utilized.
