Symptoms

While attempting to set REMOTE_LISTENER or LOCAL_LISTENER using the alter system command, the following error is thrown:

ORA-00972: identifier is too long

Examples:

SQL> alter system set LOCAL_LISTENER="(description=(address=(protocol=tcp)(host=
127.0.0.1)(port=1521))(address=(protocol=tcp)(port=1521)(host=myhostname-PC.us.oracle.com)))" scope=both;

or

SQL> alter system set REMOTE_LISTENER="(description=(address=(protocol=tcp)(host=
127.0.0.1)(port=1521))(address=(protocol=tcp)(port=1521)(host=myhostname-PC.us.oracle.com)))" scope=both;

Each of these attempts would fail with the following message:

ORA-00972: identifier is too long

Changes

This is likely a new installation or a change to LOCAL or REMOTE_LISTENER is required in a RAC / SCAN environment.
