While attempting to set REMOTE_LISTENER or LOCAL_LISTENER using the alter system command, the following error is thrown:

ORA-00972: identifier is too long

SQL> alter system set LOCAL_LISTENER="(description=(address=(protocol=tcp)(host=" scope=both;

SQL> alter system set REMOTE_LISTENER="(description=(address=(protocol=tcp)(host=" scope=both;

Each of these attempts would fail with the following message:

ORA-00972: identifier is too long

This is likely a new installation or a change to LOCAL or REMOTE_LISTENER is required in a RAC / SCAN environment.
