Error Message When Calling Oraenv Script From User Not In Dba Group in 11gR2 (Doc ID 1387463.1)

Last updated on JANUARY 20, 2016

Applies to:

Oracle Database - Enterprise Edition - Version 11.2.0.2 and later
Generic UNIX

Symptoms

The 'oraenv' script is used to allow the DBA to set a common environment for all users and make it easier for users to move between databases.

When calling the oraenv script  from a Unix user id which is not in the 'dba' group, the following messages appear:

$ . oraenv
ORACLE_SID = [User1] ?
ORACLE_BASE environment variable is not being set since this
information is not available for the current user ID eswmt03.
You can set ORACLE_BASE manually if it is required.

This is because "$ORACLE_HOME/inventory/ContentsXML/oraclehomeproperties.xml " is not accessible by non-dba users

The permissions of this file and its parent directories do not allow non-dba group users to access it.
