ORA-27101 and ORA-01034 Starting An Instance Via SQL*Plus (Doc ID 139588.1)

During the installation process, an attempt to startup a database fails with the following errors:

ORA-27101 Shared memory realm does not exist

ORA-01034 ORACLE not available

After the installation process has completed, the same errors are received when invoking SQL*Plus.
