Symptoms

When NVL or COALESCE is used with a binary XML column as first parameter, EXTRACTVALUE gives ORA-19025. Using a CLOB XML column gives correct result.

Example

NVL

SELECT extractvalue(nvl(xml_binary, xml_clob), '/A/text()')FROM t_xml;
FROM t_xml

ORA-19025: EXTRACTVALUE returns value of only one node

COALESCE

SELECT extractvalue(coalesce(xml_binary, xml_clob), '/A/text()')
FROM t_xml;
FROM t_xml
*
ERROR at line 2:
ORA-19025: EXTRACTVALUE returns value of only one node
