Windows: SCAN VIPs Can Not be Pinged (Doc ID 1451953.1)

Last updated on OCTOBER 11, 2019

Applies to:

Oracle Database - Enterprise Edition - Version 11.2.0.1 and later
Generic Windows

Symptoms

o Intermittent TCP/IP ping failures of some of the SCAN VIP addresses in the 11.2 RAC cluster.
o Nslookup commands work fine.
o Services or VIPS have not been relocated to another node
o Network configuration for all machines, ie "ipconfig /all" is the same for all nodes
o No firewalls or Antivirus software is running

Example IPV4 IP addresses used here:

ping 10.x.x.789

Pinging 10.x.x.789 with 32 bytes of data:
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.

Ping statistics for 10.x.x.789:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),

Ping using source address can work

ping -S 11.x.x.11 10.x.x.789

Pinging 10.x.x.789 from 11.x.x.11 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 10.x.x.789: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
Reply from 10.x.x.789: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
Reply from 10.x.x.789: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
Reply from 10.x.x.789: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128

Ping statistics for 10.x.x.789:
  Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
  Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms

As nodes are rebooted, ping may work for some SCAN VIP addresses, that were failing before the reboot.
And fail for other SCAN VIP addresses that where working.

Example :

Node1 All the scan VIPS are able to be pinged
Node2 Some SCAN VIPS ping failing
Node3 Some SCAN VIPS ping failing
Reboot
Node1 Some SCAN VIPS ping failing
Node2 All the scan VIPS are able to be pinged
Node3 Some SCAN VIPS ping failing
