MySQL: InnoDB History List Length and the Shared Tablespace (ibdata1) Keeps Growing Under Heavy Workloads, Before Version 5.5.8, 5.1.53 or 5.0.70

Information in this document applies to any platform.
In the following MySQL versions using the InnoDB storage engine:
- MySQL 5.0.68 and all later MySQL 5.0 releases.
- MySQL 5.1.24 to 5.1.52 (both releases included and both using the built-in InnoDB and InnoDB Plugin).
- MySQL 5.5.0 to 5.5.7 (both releases included).
- With data still existing in the shared table space and versions prior to 5.1.63, 5.5.23, and 5.6.6.
After a period of with heavy workload the InnoDB history list does not reduce in size again and the shared tables space continues to grow even if innodb_file_per_table is used.
