ASM slave processes (ONNN) left open causing CPU 100% and ORA-00700[kfnReleaseASM1] error on database (Doc ID 1493148.1)

ORA-700[KFNRELEASEASM1] SIGNALED BY CKPT ON DATABASE AFTER EXHAUSTED FRA


If the ASM slave processes remain idle for 250 days, it starts spinning in infinite loop.

As a workaround, you can kill the Onn process during a maintenance window and restart DB.

The main purpose of Onn process is open connection between the database instance and the ASM to perform metadata operations such as create datafile.

The patch was discovered due to the flash recovery area becoming full
