Symptoms

When executing a schema change the statement is delayed by two minutes and the MySQL error log on the node executing the statement contains:

The schema change does not need to be an ALTER TABLE like in the case above; it can be any type of schema change. Likewise it can both happen during the prepare and commit phases.

The issue is more likely to happen for tables that contains BLOB or TEXT columns, but is not exclusive to those tables.
