Exception: Unsupported file format: AvroDataFile Running Sqoop --hive-import with --as-avrodatafile or bogus data (Doc ID 1559906.1)

Symptoms

Running a sqoop import with --hive-import and --as-avrodatafile as something like:

sqoop import --connect <connection string> --as-avrodatafile ... --hive-import  --hive-table <hive_table>


Raises:

ERROR sqoop.Sqoop: Got exception running Sqoop: java.lang.RuntimeException: Unsupported file format: AvroDataFile
java.lang.RuntimeException: Unsupported file format: AvroDataFile
...


Or

Running  sqoop with --hive-import and --as-avrodatafile or  running sqoop with --hive-import and --as-sequenfilefile raises no errors, loads the table successfully, however querying the Hive table returns bogus characters.
