How Does OSB Select Tape Volumes For a Backup Job ? (Doc ID 1589904.1)

Last updated on APRIL 09, 2019

Applies to:

Oracle Secure Backup - Version to [Release 10.3 to 10.4]
Information in this document applies to any platform.

In OSB 10.x it sometimes happens that a backup job is not using existing volumes that already contain some backup data but still have some remaining space left. Instead it uses new (unlabeled) volumes or expired volumes. This is true when a job reaches the end of a tape volume and needs a new volume to continue the backup job.

When no expired or unlabeled volumes exist in the tape libraries, OSB will propose the next Volume ID sequence number and wait until a new tape is labeled with this volume ID.

This Document tries to explain how OSB selects volumes for new backup jobs. This document only applies to OSB versions 10.3 and 10.4. The selection algorithm is subject to change in more recent version of OSB.
