Symptoms

When trying to attach to a remote database, the following error may occur:

Further analysis will indicate that the file RDBSERVERnn.EXE in SYS$SYSTEM has been overwritten with a log file RDBSERVER.LOG from the remote connection.

Changes

There are three prerequisits to run into this error:

1. Remote access must use TCPIP instead of DECNET.
2. A system logical RDBSERVER must be defined that points to SYS$SYSTEM:RDBSERVERnn.EXE.
3. The user defined in the TCPIP service RDBSERVER (likely RDB$REMOTEnn) must have enough privileges to create a file SYS$COMMON:[SYSEXE]RDBSERVERnn.EXE
