DBCA is not failing if Management Database Resource Creation Fails (Doc ID 1631311.1)

Last updated on JUNE 05, 2014

Applies to:

Oracle Database - Enterprise Edition - Version 12.1.0.1 and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

In 12.1.0.1, DBCA fails to register a MGMTDB with Oracle Grid Infrastructure will not treated as an error.

The issue occur during GI upgrade MGMTDB is created by default in disk group for OCR/Voting disk group. Occasionally, the creation of MGMTDB fails due to insufficient disk space in OCR/Voting disk group.

A workaround is creating the MGMTDB in different disk group other than OCR/Voting disk group using dbca, but dbca does not report an error if registration of the MGMTDB resource to OCR fails.  The example below shows "how to create MGMTDB manually using dbca".  The output shows successful creation of MGMTDB, and dbca reports no error.  However, "crsctl stat res -t" does not show the MGMTDB resource.

$<GI_HOME>/bin/dbca -silent -createDatabase -templateName MGMTSeed_Database.dbc -sid -MGMTDB -gdbName _mgmtdb -storageType ASM -diskGroupName DATA -datafileJarLocation /u01/app/12.1.0.1/grid/assistants/dbca/templates -characterset AL32UTF8 -autoGeneratePasswords -oui_internal

The dbca created and started the MGTMDB database but did not register MGTMDB with Oracle Grid Infrastructure.

$ ps -ef | grep pmon
oracle   26966     1  0 08:34 ?        00:00:01 mdb_pmon_-MGMTDB

The 'crsctl stat res -t' output do not show MGMTDB resource registered in Oracle Grid Infrastructure.
