datapatch fails to connect with ORA-01034: ORACLE not available (Doc ID 1635432.1)

Information in this document applies to any platform.


Note:  This is to address an issue during the execution of datapatch during a Post Installation (after OPatch properly installs the patch) or Post De-installation (after OPatch properly rolls back the patch).  It does not address running Post De-installation manually without an OPatch rollback running 1st.


Datapatch may fail while connecting to the database following error:

% datapatch -verbose
SQL Patching tool version on Thu Jan 23 10:54:40 2014
Copyright (c) 2013, Oracle. All rights reserved.

Connecting to database...Database connect failed with:
ORA-01034: ORACLE not available
ORA-27101: shared memory realm does not exist
SVR4 Error: 2: No such file or directory (DBD ERROR: OCISessionBegin)


 datapatch is executed to perform post apply / rollback steps
